What Hotel Key Cards Are and How to Choose

A hotel key card is an advanced electronic access credential—typically the size of a standard credit card (ISO/IEC 7810 CR-80, 85.6 × 54 mm)—that contains an embedded RFID chip and antenna. When held near a door reader, the card transmits a unique encrypted ID; the reader securely checks it against the room's assignment and either grants access or rejects the card. Depending on how your property's access control system is configured, this exact same credential can be programmed to seamlessly unlock elevators, fitness centers, pools, and parking garages.

Choosing the right hotel key card comes down to three crucial decisions: material (which dictates durability, eco-friendliness, and guest perception), RFID frequency and chip type (which must seamlessly match your existing lock system), and print finishing (custom branding, laser engraving, or UV printing). This page guides you through these choices and links to the two premium material categories we manufacture: Eco-Friendly Wooden Key Cards and Recycled PVC Cards.

Powered by our industry-leading manufacturing facility, our RFID solutions are trusted by the world's most prestigious hospitality brands, including Holiday Inn, Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton, Four Seasons, and Fairmont.

How Hotel Key Cards Work: RFID Technology

Hotel key cards work using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. Each card contains a small RFID chip and antenna that communicates wirelessly with the door lock reader. When a guest holds the card near the lock, the reader verifies the card’s unique identifier and grants access—no swiping, no inserting, no fumbling with luggage.

Available in premium PVC, recycled PVC, and sustainable wood, our hotel key cards support both 125kHz (low frequency) and 13.56MHz (high frequency) RFID chips, ensuring compatibility with every major hotel door lock system worldwide, including Vingcard. We supply the exact blank contactless chips your lock system requires (such as MIFARE Ultralight® EV1, MIFARE DESFire® EV2/EV3, HID iCLASS®, LEGIC®, and EM4200), ready for your front desk to securely encode on-site.

For hotel management, RFID key cards enable master card hierarchies, floor-level access control, time-limited guest access, and the ability to instantly deactivate lost or stolen cards from the front desk. The same hotel room key cards can also control access to elevators, parking garages, fitness centers, pools, spa facilities, and VIP areas—one card, multiple touchpoints across your entire property.

Eco-Friendly Hotel Key Cards

Biodegradable & Recycled Key Card Alternatives

Hotels worldwide are replacing traditional plastic key cards with sustainable alternatives to meet guest expectations and environmental regulations. We manufacture two categories of eco-friendly hotel key cards: genuine wooden key cards from FSC®-certified timber, and recycled PVC cards from post-consumer waste. Each material delivers identical RFID performance to standard PVC while dramatically reducing environmental impact.

  • Eco-Friendly Materials: Customers can choose from genuine wood cards or versatile recycled PVC, both offering a durable and sustainable alternative to virgin plastics.
  • Reduced Environmental Impact: Traditional PVC takes 400+ years to decompose. Our wooden eco-solutions are biodegradable with zero microplastics, while our recycled PVC cards give a second life to post-consumer waste, keeping plastic out of landfills.
  • Lower Carbon Footprint: Renewable and recycled material sources with a significantly lower carbon footprint than traditional petroleum-based PVC manufacturing.
  • FSC® Certified Wood: Our wooden cards are FSC® certified with verified chain-of-custody environmental integrity.

Whether you choose wooden cards or recycled PVC, every eco-card helps your property meet sustainability goals while delivering the same premium guest experience.
